A Step-by-Step Guide for Mentors and Mentees

Mentorship plays a vital role in academic growth, career guidance, and personal development. To strengthen support among members, the UCCMSA Mentorship Platform was created to connect students who are willing to guide others with those who need guidance.

This guide explains how to register as a mentor and how to find and request a mentor on the platform.


Before You Start

To use the mentorship system, you must:

  • Be a registered member of the website
  • Be logged into your account
  • Be a medical student or an Alumni

If you do not have an account yet, sign up first and complete your profile.


How to Register as a Mentor

Becoming a mentor allows you to guide junior colleagues academically, professionally, or personally.

Step 1: Log In

  • Visit the website
  • Log into your account

Step 2: Go to the Mentorship Section

  • Navigate to ‘⚙️’ and select Edit Profile icon from the dashboard

Step 3: Fill the Mentor Registration Form

You will be asked to provide information such as:

  • Want to opt in as mentor? If yes, check the ‘‘I want to Mentor” box
  • Your level or year of study
  • Areas of interest or expertise
  • Your availability
  • A short bio/description about yourself

Fill this honestly so mentees can find the right match.

Step 4: Submit for Approval

  • After submitting, your request will be reviewed by administrators
  • This ensures only suitable and committed mentors are approved

Once approved, your profile becomes visible to mentees.


How to Get a Mentor (For Mentees)

If you’re looking for guidance, the platform makes it easy to find someone who fits your needs.

Step 1: Log In

  • Sign in to your account
  • You must/must have attemded uccsms

Step 2: Browse Available Mentors

  • Once registered, a ‘Browse Mentor’ link would be available at the bottom of your profile.
  • Visit the Browse Mentor page
  • Browse mentor profiles
  • Use filters such as level, availability, or interest

Each mentor profile shows:

  • Level
  • Interests
  • Short bio
  • Availability

Step 3: Send a Mentorship Request

  • Click on the mentor you’re interested in
  • Send a mentorship request with a short message explaining
    • Note that you can send multiple requests but the first mentor to accept becomes your mentor.

Step 4: Wait for Approval

  • The mentor will review your request
  • Once accepted, the mentorship connection is created

You’ll then be able to see their names in your user profiles.


Messaging and Communication

After a mentorship request is approved:

  • Mentors and mentees can send messages
  • Conversations remain private
  • This helps maintain a safe and focused mentorship environment
